Vanderpump Rules star Tom Sandoval recently took the stage on the hit reality competition series America’s Got Talent (AGT), delivering an audition performance that reportedly left the judges surprised. Coming two years after the highly publicized “Scandoval” cheating scandal that significantly impacted his public image, Sandoval’s appearance on the show is framed as an opportunity to showcase his musical ambitions and potentially redefine himself.
Sandoval, frontman for the band Tom Sandoval & the Most Extras, appeared in the episode slated for June 24th. Addressing his notoriety head-on in a clip from the show, he introduced himself by stating, “My name is Tom Sandoval, I was the most hated man in America. This is the chance to show who I am as a musician.”
For his performance, Sandoval and his band performed a cover of A-ha’s classic 1980s hit, “Take on Me.” He sported black pants paired with a distinctive glittering, bedazzled green jacket. Initial reactions from the judging panel were notable. Sofía Vergara, in particular, appeared skeptical at first but was visibly surprised and impressed by Sandoval’s vocal ability as he launched into the song. Similarly, Simon Cowell, known for his tough critiques, initially seemed less than thrilled upon seeing the reality star but was later observed smiling and seemingly enjoying the performance. The audience reportedly reacted positively, cheering, especially when Sandoval successfully hit a challenging high note during the chorus. The preview did not reveal the final outcome of his audition – whether he advanced to the next round.
Adding another layer of connection to the AGT panel, Sandoval previously interacted with judge Howie Mandel. Mandel hosted Sandoval on his podcast shortly after the Scandoval broke in 2023. During that interview, Sandoval expressed regret over his handling of the breakup with Ariana Madix, admitting he “handled s–t wrong” and “f–ked up” their nearly decadelong relationship. He acknowledged that “Nothing is excusable for what I did.”
Appearing before the celebrity judges on America’s Got Talent is a significant step in the competition process, but it’s important to understand that it follows multiple preliminary stages. Contestants typically don’t audition directly for the judges first. There are initial virtual or in-person open calls managed by casting teams and producers. Acts must successfully navigate these initial rounds and receive approval from executive producers to even reach the judges’ stage. Open call auditions are usually limited to just 90 seconds. The show has rules about prohibited items like fire, certain rigging, fireworks, weapons, drugs, and alcohol during open calls. Acts involving animals require specific forms and records.
For those invited to the judges’ audition round, AGT does provide some support, covering travel expenses if needed, including airfare, bus/train tickets, or gas reimbursement, along with hotel stays and a daily allowance. However, hair and makeup services are not provided for contestants during this specific stage – they are expected to arrive “camera ready.” These services become available in later rounds. Contestants rehearse their acts thoroughly before performing and even practice “results rehearsals” to prepare for potential advancement or elimination logistics. It’s also worth noting the show’s famous $1 million prize isn’t a lump sum payment; winners typically receive it as an annuity paid over 40 years ($25,000 annually before taxes) or can opt for the present cash value of that annuity.
Sandoval’s AGT audition represents a high-profile attempt to pivot from reality TV scandal to serious musician, putting his talent to the ultimate test before a panel known for discerning acts. Whether he earns a golden buzzer or faces elimination, his performance has certainly garnered attention.
