Blumhouse Secures Stake in Iconic ‘Saw’ Franchise
The future of the chilling ‘Saw’ universe is taking a significant turn. Blumhouse, the prolific horror studio, has officially closed a deal to acquire the prospective rights share previously held by Twisted Pictures. This strategic move, facilitated by CAA Evolution, positions Blumhouse as a key player alongside long-time partner Lionsgate, who will retain a 50% interest in the massively successful horror property.
This development is particularly exciting for fans, as it signals a potential creative return for the franchise’s original architects, James Wan and Leigh Whannell. Wan, who directed the groundbreaking first ‘Saw’ film written by Whannell, saw his company Atomic Monster merge with Blumhouse last year. This deal effectively brings the creative minds behind the 2004 debut back into the fold for future installments.
Ownership and Distribution Structure
Under the terms of the newly finalized agreement, Blumhouse now holds the shares of future ‘Saw’ films formerly owned by producers Oren Koules and Mark Burg of Twisted Pictures. Lionsgate remains an equal partner, holding a 50% stake in the intellectual property. The studio, which has distributed all ten films to date, will continue its role as distributor for upcoming movies, ensuring continuity in getting new ‘Saw’ entries to audiences worldwide.
The ‘Saw’ franchise is a global phenomenon, boasting over $1 billion in box office revenue across its ten films. Beyond movies, the IP spans comic books, video games, theme park attractions, and merchandise, highlighting its broad cultural impact.
Regarding the existing film library, Content Partners has acquired a stake, joining Burg who retains a share, and Lionsgate, which continues to hold its existing interest and handles distribution.
The Creators and Producers Weigh In
The transition marks a significant moment for the franchise’s history. Producers Oren Koules and Mark Burg shared their perspectives on passing the baton.
“With the success of the 10th film, this felt like the right time to pass the baton,” said Koules, expressing pride in the two decades of work with Lionsgate and deep gratitude to the dedicated fanbase. He added that seeing the franchise return to creators James and Leigh, with Jason Blum leading the next chapter, felt especially meaningful, noting his late partner Gregg Hoffman would be pleased.
Mark Burg reflected on the journey since financing the first “magical” film with Wan and Whannell 21 years ago. He credited the fans for keeping the franchise alive and acknowledged it had been an “amazing ride.” Citing personal reasons, including the recent passing of beloved executive producer Jason Constantine, Burg stated it was time to move on. “Saw will always be a part of my history and Hollywood history, and I hope Jigsaw and the Saw Universe live on for many more movies and years to come,” he shared, thanking the cast, crew, and Lionsgate executives involved over the years.
A New Chapter with Original Visionaries
James Wan is eager to revisit the universe where his Hollywood journey began. “Coming back to this world with a fresh perspective is both thrilling and deeply personal,” Wan stated. He sees this as a significant creative return, aiming to “embrace the original spirit whilst pushing the legacy forward in bold, unexpected ways.”
Jason Blum, CEO and founder of Blumhouse, highlighted the strategic importance of the acquisition. “The Saw franchise has defined a generation of horror, and its cultural impact continues to grow,” Blum said, recognizing it as a highly successful genre property. His primary excitement, however, lies in having James Wan and Leigh Whannell back to guide the franchise’s future.
Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, acknowledged Koules and Burg as outstanding partners in building the billion-dollar franchise. As they transition leadership to Wan and the Blumhouse team, Fogelson expressed confidence, stating, “Billy couldn’t be in more gifted or twisted hands. Game on.”
This new partnership between Blumhouse and Lionsgate, with the potential re-engagement of James Wan and Leigh Whannell, sets the stage for an intriguing next phase for the enduring ‘Saw’ horror saga.
