LSU Wins 2025 College World Series Title
OMAHA, NEB. – The LSU Tigers have once again ascended to the pinnacle of college baseball, claiming the 2025 NCAA Division I national championship. LSU defeated Coastal Carolina in the Men’s College World Series (MCWS) finals, securing their eighth title in program history in dominant fashion on June 22, 2025.
The Tigers clinched the championship by sweeping the best-of-three series against the Chanticleers. LSU took a tight Game 1 with a score of 1-0, followed by a decisive 5-3 victory in Game 2 to lift the trophy in Omaha.
Eighth Championship Solidifies LSU’s Place Among Elite
This latest triumph further cements LSU’s legacy as one of the most successful programs in college baseball history. With eight national championships (1991, 1993, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2009, 2023, 2025), the Tigers now rank second all-time in MCWS titles, trailing only the University of Southern California (12 championships).
The program’s dynasty was initially built under legendary coach Skip Bertman, who led LSU to five championships between 1991 and 2000. Current head coach Jay Johnson has proudly carried on this winning tradition, guiding the Tigers to two national titles in just three seasons (2023 and 2025).
Notably, LSU’s eight championships account for every single Men’s College World Series title won by a university located in the state of Louisiana, highlighting the program’s unique dominance within the state.
The Road to Omaha: How LSU Reached the Finals
The journey to the national championship began with a 64-team field competing in regional sites across the country from May 30-June 2. This was followed by the Super Regionals from June 6-9, narrowing the field to 16 teams. The ultimate destination was Omaha, Nebraska, which hosted the Men’s College World Series from June 13 to June 22/23, featuring the remaining eight teams.
The MCWS format consists of two double-elimination brackets, with the winners of each bracket advancing to the best-of-three championship series. LSU, entering the tournament as the No. 6 national seed, navigated a competitive path through their bracket, securing crucial wins against formidable opponents like Arkansas and UCLA to reach the finals. Coastal Carolina emerged victorious from the other bracket, setting the stage for the championship showdown.
Sweeping Coastal Carolina for the Title
The championship series lived up to the hype, though LSU ultimately proved too strong for Coastal Carolina.
Game 1 (Saturday, June 21): LSU 1, Coastal Carolina 0
A pitcher’s duel defined the series opener, with LSU’s dominant pitching performance leading to a crucial 1-0 victory.
Game 2 (Sunday, June 22): LSU 5, Coastal Carolina 3
The Tigers’ offense came alive in key moments in Game 2, combining with solid pitching to secure a 5-3 win and complete the two-game sweep, earning them the national title.
Individual Honors: Kade Anderson Earns Most Outstanding Player
Highlighting LSU’s exceptional tournament run, pitcher Kade Anderson was named the Jack Diesing, Sr. Most Outstanding Player (MOP) of the 2025 Men’s College World Series. Anderson’s performance, particularly his complete game shutout in the pivotal Game 1 of the finals, was instrumental in the Tigers’ success.
Anderson is the seventh player from LSU to win the MCWS MOP award, tying the Tigers with Southern California for the most MOP winners in College World Series history. The MOP award, voted on by covering media members, recognizes the top individual performance throughout the MCWS tournament in Omaha.
Understanding the NCAA Baseball Championship
The NCAA Division I baseball tournament is the full 64-team competition that begins in late May. The Men’s College World Series (MCWS) is the culminating event of this tournament, featuring the final eight teams competing in Omaha, Nebraska, to determine the national champion.
Teams qualify for the NCAA tournament through two avenues: automatic berths awarded to conference champions (29 in 2025) and at-large selections (35 in 2025) chosen by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee.
The tournament has a rich history dating back to 1947, with the College World Series portion finding its permanent home in Omaha since 1950.
