The entertainment community, especially in Hawaii, is mourning the loss of actor David Hekili Kenui Bell, who recently appeared in Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Lilo & Stitch.” Bell’s family confirmed the sad news on Sunday, June 16, 2025.

Confirming the Sad News

The announcement of Bell’s passing was first shared publicly by his sister, Jalene Kanani Bell, in a heartfelt post on Facebook. The news quickly reached friends and colleagues, many of whom learned of his death via social media.

His representative, Lashauna Downie, conveyed her shock and sadness to TMZ, stating she was “learning like you through social media.” She described Bell as “heartbreaking & sad,” adding that “He was one of my best talent & embodied the true meaning of aloha… a gentle giant.”

As of now, a public cause of death has not been revealed.

A Life Remembered: Tributes and Final Memories

In her touching tribute, Jalene described her brother as “sweet, generous, talented, funny, brilliant and handsome.” She spoke of their “unconditional love” for one another and reflected on their close bond.

A particularly poignant memory shared by Jalene was their final family outing just two weeks before his death. David treated his family to the opening night of the “Lilo & Stitch” premiere in Kapolei. Jalene recalled watching fans dressed in Stitch gear, sharing popcorn, and dreaming of shave ice after the film – a joyful, shared experience connected to his recent work.

Friend Gerard Elmore also reportedly paid an emotional tribute to Bell.

Beyond Lilo & Stitch: A Proud Hawaiian’s Career

A proud Hawaiian and member of the Screen Actors Guild, David Hekili Kenui Bell held a deep passion for acting and voiceover work. His unique background, combining English understanding, Indigenous knowledge, and Pidgin, made him a distinct talent for delivering lines, which his sister referred to as being “a diamond in the rough” for the industry.

While his appearance in the “Lilo & Stitch” live-action film brought him recent attention, Bell had other notable roles throughout his career. He appeared as Manu Saluni in Season 1 of “Magnum P.I.” and as Isaac in Season 5, Episode 4 of “Hawaii Five-0.” In “Lilo & Stitch,” he played a character credited as the “Big Hawaiian Dude,” known for a comedic scene where he drops his shave ice after witnessing an alien portal.

Beyond the screen, Bell was well-known locally for his voice work over the public address system at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole, where he also served as Assistant Airport Superintendent. His dedication to this role, noted his sister, was about creating a positive and safe customer experience. He also spent time traveling as an ambassador for Kona Brew with his dog, Brutus.

Originally from Kaimuki and having attended Kalani High School and Punahou schools, Bell resided in Waimea prior to his passing. He had recently shared his enthusiasm for the “Lilo & Stitch” production on his Instagram page, posting photos from the set and a clip from his audition. Following a cast and crew screening in May, he expressed gratitude to everyone involved, particularly highlighting the local Hawaii crew as “the true stars.”

Though his time was cut short, David Hekili Kenui Bell’s warm spirit, talent, and contributions left a deep impact on his family, friends, and the communities he touched.

Rest in peace, David Hekili Kenui Bell.
