A critical assessment from Ukrainian military analysts DeepState has revealed significant issues plaguing the defense in Donetsk Oblast’s Vuhledar sector, including systematic false reporting that distorted the reality on the ground. This comes as Russian forces reportedly make substantial advances in the area.
According to the analysis by DeepState, some units previously operating under the Vuhledar tactical group – now referred to as the “now-former” group – repeatedly filed misleading reports. These reports allegedly claimed control over specific settlements or individual positions that were not actually held. This practice, DeepState states, created a “distorted perception of the situation on the line of contact” and did nothing to improve the actual battlefield dynamics.
DeepState paints a grim picture of the overall military situation in this part of the front. The defense in the Vuhledar sector is described as “rapidly collapsing,” allowing the enemy to achieve “significant gains” in their advance.
Russian Advances Detailed:
DeepState’s report highlights several areas where Russian forces have made considerable progress:
Significant advances have been documented near the settlements of Shevchenko, Burlatske, and Vilne Pole on the Novopavlivka front in Donetsk Oblast.
Intensive assault operations, often utilizing a large number of infantry, are being conducted along the Oleksiivka – Zelene Pole line.
Russian troops are also pushing forward from the Zaporizhzhia direction, advancing towards Zirky.
Active infantry movements and attempts to fully capture the village of Komar are underway.
- Constant assaults persist in the wider Shevchenko – Vilne Pole – Novosilka area.

Strategic Implications: Shevchenko and Lithium
The capture of key locations like Shevchenko, identified by DeepState as an area of Russian advance, carries significant strategic weight beyond territorial control. Reporting indicates that Shevchenko is located near one of Ukraine’s largest lithium ore deposits.
This deposit is estimated to hold substantial reserves, potentially totalling around 1.2 million tonnes of ore with a lithium content exceeding 1.5%. Lithium is a vital mineral with surging global demand, being a critical component in batteries for electric vehicles, electronics, and various other modern technologies.
The potential Russian control over such a valuable resource underscores the broader economic and strategic motivations tied to tactical military gains in the conflict zones, linking the fight for seemingly small villages to control over critical materials essential for the future global economy.
The combination of intense Russian military pressure and internal issues like misleading reporting appears to be contributing to the deteriorating situation in the Vuhledar sector. DeepState analysts concluded that the next update to their maps reflecting the changes on this front line is expected to be “disappointing.”
