With the gaming world still buzzing about the record-breaking launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, it seems Sony and Microsoft are feeling the heat – or perhaps just sensing the right time to start talking about what comes next. Both PlayStation and Xbox have recently offered tantalizing glimpses into their future console plans, hinting that the successor generation, including the highly anticipated PS6 and new Xbox hardware, is firmly on their minds.
PlayStation 6: The Future is ‘Top of Mind’
Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino recently confirmed that planning for the future of the PlayStation platform is a high priority. While tight-lipped on specifics, Nishino stated that the company is “committed to exploring a new and enhanced way for players to engage with our content and services.”
Official documents from 2022, revealed during the investigation into Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, had previously suggested that a new console generation might not arrive until fall 2028 at the earliest. Given how quiet Sony has traditionally been about its next-gen plans until closer to launch, this 2028 timeframe could still be the target internally. However, the strong market performance of competitors like the Nintendo Switch 2 could potentially influence these timelines.
Xbox Teams Up for the Next Leap
Not to be outdone, Xbox has also provided a significant update on its next-generation ambitions. Xbox president Sarah Bond announced a strategic partnership with AMD to co-engineer the custom silicon that will power a range of upcoming devices, including their next line of consoles.
Xbox is setting ambitious goals for this collaboration, aiming to deliver advanced graphics with enhanced visual quality, leverage AI for more immersive gameplay, and ensure backward compatibility with players’ existing Xbox game libraries. A key vision is to enable play across devices, offering an “Xbox experience designed for players – without being confined to a single store or tied to one device.”
While those same 2022 documents also suggested a 2028 window for the next Xbox, recent rumors paint a potentially earlier picture. Some reports now point towards a possible fall 2026 release window, or even suggest that Microsoft could aim for as early as fall 2025. This speculation is partly fueled by comparisons to past console cycles; for example, Microsoft announced “Project Scarlett” (which became the Xbox Series X) in June 2019 before launching it in fall 2020. Following a similar timeline could suggest a quicker turnaround this generation.
Reports also indicate that Microsoft views the upcoming generation as potentially featuring the “largest technical leap you’ve ever seen.” An earlier launch could strategically position Xbox to gain a crucial market advantage over PlayStation, particularly given Sony’s sales lead in recent generations. One rumored sign of this potential acceleration is the Call of Duty title planned for 2026, which one leaker claims is being developed exclusively for next-generation hardware with no support for older consoles.
