Tampa Bay Buccaneers Extend Head Coach Todd Bowles and GM Jason Licht
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are locking in their leadership for the foreseeable future. The team officially announced Thursday, June 26, 2025, that both Head Coach Todd Bowles and General Manager Jason Licht have signed multiyear contract extensions. This move signals a commitment to the direction established under their guidance.
Buccaneers owner and co-chairman Joel Glazer emphasized the critical role Bowles and Licht have played. “Jason and Todd’s excellent leadership and vision have been critical to our organization’s success,” Glazer said in a statement. He highlighted that the “winning culture they have established has us well positioned into the future,” adding that the “continuity and stability they provide will play a large role in our ability to compete for additional championships.” Glazer specifically praised Licht as a “top talent evaluator and general manager” and recognized Bowles’ achievement of three consecutive division titles, identifying him as a “leading defensive mind.”
While specific financial terms were not disclosed by the team, sources indicate that Bowles’ new agreement is a three-year extension, securing his tenure through the 2028 season.
Coach Todd Bowles: Building on Divisional Success
Todd Bowles, 61, is set to begin his fourth season as the Buccaneers’ head coach. Under his leadership, the team has posted a 27-24 regular-season record and has made the playoffs every year, achieving three consecutive NFC South division titles from 2022 through 2024. His 27 wins over his first three seasons rank as the second-best total for a Bucs head coach in franchise history, behind only his predecessor, Bruce Arians.
Before taking the head coaching reins in early 2022, Bowles served as the Buccaneers’ defensive coordinator for three seasons, including the Super Bowl LV-winning campaign in 2020. He is widely recognized as one of the league’s leading defensive minds. The Bucs’ defense under his coordination and subsequent head coaching oversight has consistently ranked among the NFL’s best since 2019, leading the league in rushing defense (93.8 yards per game), opponent yards per carry (4.0), and fumble recoveries (68). The unit also ranks second in sacks (281.0) and fifth in red zone efficiency (53.8%) during this span.
Bowles expressed his enthusiasm about continuing the partnership. “I am excited to continue working with Jason for years to come as we build on the success we’ve enjoyed and keep reaching for even bigger and better goals,” Bowles stated. He added his appreciation for the Glazer Family’s confidence in his leadership, calling it a responsibility he doesn’t “take lightly” and is “honored to have.”
GM Jason Licht: A Proven Talent Evaluator
Jason Licht is entering his 12th season with the Buccaneers, making him the NFL’s fifth-longest-tenured traditional general manager. Under his guidance, the Buccaneers have undergone a significant transformation, culminating in the Super Bowl LV championship.
Licht is celebrated as a top talent evaluator, successfully drafting cornerstone players who form the core of the current roster. This includes stars like wide receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs, defensive tackle Vita Vea, safety Antoine Winfield Jr., and more recent impactful picks such as Calijah Kancey and Cody Mauch. A pivotal move during Licht’s tenure was the strategic signing of veteran quarterback Tom Brady before the 2020 season, a move that proved instrumental in securing the franchise’s second Super Bowl title.
The Buccaneers’ commitment to building through the draft is evident in league-wide statistics; Tampa Bay leads the NFL in total snaps and starts by homegrown players selected in Rounds 1-5 since 2014.
Licht echoed the sentiments of continued collaboration and gratitude. “I am very grateful to the Glazer Family for the trust and belief they have shown in what we are doing here,” Licht said. He added his excitement to “continue working alongside Todd well into the future as we continue our mission of finding and developing talented players and chasing additional championships for our fans.”
The extensions provide the Buccaneers with stability at key positions as they look to build on recent success, including a 10-7 record last season which ended with a loss in the NFC wild-card game to the Washington Commanders. The club is clearly signaling its confidence in the Bowles-Licht partnership to lead them forward.
