Glastonbury Festival 2025 Kicks Off
The world-renowned Glastonbury Festival officially opened its gates for 2025 today, welcoming hundreds of thousands of eager festival-goers to Worthy Farm in Somerset. Under often cloudy skies, a torrent of humanity descended upon the sprawling 900-acre site – roughly the size of 500 football pitches – marking the beginning of five days dedicated to music, arts, and unique experiences.
Tickets for this year’s event, priced at £378.50, famously sold out in under 40 minutes, underscoring its status as the most popular UK festival and one of the largest globally.
Festival co-founder Sir Michael Eavis and his daughter Emily were on hand to officially open the pedestrian gates, a moment of joy for many of the early arrivals.
The Worthy Farm Trek: Arrivals & Setup
The initial hours of Glastonbury day one are a true festival rite of passage: the challenging trek across the green fields and sometimes muddy tracks, laden with a week’s worth of essentials. Thousands of people were seen carrying, pushing, and pulling immense loads, a vibrant display of determination and excitement.
Smiles were abundant despite the effort, as attendees navigated the pathways towards their chosen camping grounds. The scenes captured the spirit of arrival, from individuals balancing towering backpacks to creative transport solutions. One particularly memorable sight involved a man who cleverly modified a wheelie bin to haul his gear, definitely turning heads among the crowds. Even areas like the iconic Carhenge quickly became popular selfie stops as people settled in and soaked up the atmosphere.
Once tents were pitched and camps established across the vast landscape that transforms into a temporary city, the mood shifted to relaxation and anticipation for the incredible weekend ahead.
More Than Just Music: Scale & Anticipation
Glastonbury 2025 promises an extraordinary scale with around 200,000 attendees and an astonishing lineup featuring over 3,000 performances spread across more than 100 stages and venues. While the main musical acts don’t officially kick off until Friday, June 27th, the energy on Wednesday is palpable as people prepare for the days to come.
This year’s lineup boasts massive names headlining the iconic Pyramid Stage, including The 1975, legendary Neil Young, and pop superstar Olivia Rodrigo, set to be the second youngest headliner in the festival’s nearly 55-year history (which began in 1970). Other prominent acts across the festival include Charli XCX, Doechii, Rod Stewart, Loyle Carner, The Prodigy, Wolf Alice, and many more. Adding to the buzz are over 50 “TBA” slots fueling speculation about potential secret sets from rumoured acts like Pulp, Lady Gaga, or Radiohead.
Adding to the generally positive outlook, the weather forecast for much of the festival suggests warm temperatures between 20C and 25C, a welcome prediction given Glastonbury’s historical tendency for rain. While some showers are possible on Thursday, forecasters anticipate favourable conditions overall.
It’s also worth noting for first-timers that Worthy Farm is located about five miles (8km) outside the actual town of Glastonbury. Local businesses in the town see a significant boost in the days leading up to the festival, sometimes even helping confused attendees who mistakenly arrive there instead of Pilton.
Official Welcome: The Day One Opening Ceremony
While music stages begin later, Glastonbury Festival held its unique official opening ceremony on day one. For the first time since 1990, the festival was scheduled to open with a spectacular Theatre and Circus act directly on the Pyramid Stage at 22:00 BST, followed by a fireworks display. This special event serves as a symbolic transition from setup day to the full festival experience.
With camps established and the first official events underway, the vast crowds at Worthy Farm are now truly ready for the incredible weekend of music, culture, and community that is Glastonbury 2025.
