Imagine trying on outfits without ever stepping into a fitting room. Google is bringing this closer to reality with its new experimental app, Doppl. Launched on June 26th as part of Google Labs, Doppl leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to let you see how clothing items might look on you directly through your smartphone.

What is Google Doppl?

Doppl is an AI-powered application designed for virtual clothing try-ons. Building on Google Shopping’s previous static photo preview feature, Doppl takes the concept a step further. Instead of just overlaying clothes on a picture, the app converts your personal photo into a short, animated video. This allows you to see how an outfit might drape and move, offering a more realistic sense of its appearance in real life.

The app lets users upload a picture of themselves and then virtually try on a variety of tops, bottoms, and dresses. It even supports uploading images of clothing items found on social media or from local stores, letting you check how that specific piece suits you. You can create, save, and share your favorite digital looks with friends.

How Does Virtual Try-On Work with AI?

Using your personal photo, Doppl’s AI technology generates a brief animated visualization. This digital representation shows the selected clothing item on a virtual version of you, attempting to simulate the fit and appearance. The goal is to provide a dynamic preview that’s more informative than a simple static image overlay.

Current Limitations and What’s Next

As an experimental product housed within Google Labs, Doppl currently has some limitations:

It does not support virtual try-ons for shoes, swimwear, lingerie, or accessories.
Results may occasionally be incomplete or inconsistent. For example, if you upload a photo showing only a top, the AI might unexpectedly generate matching pants or shoes.

    1. Google acknowledges that the visual accuracy, including how clothing fits and appears, is still undergoing refinement and users might notice discrepancies.
    2. Availability

Doppl is available for download on both Android and iOS devices. However, its availability is currently restricted to users in the United States only. Google has not yet announced any plans for expanding the app to other regions.

Doppl’s launch follows Google’s earlier ventures into virtual try-on technology, such as the feature introduced in 2023 that showed clothing on different body types. This move also aligns with the growing trend and competition in the market for AI-driven shopping and fashion apps.
