Samsung’s upcoming One UI 8 update appears set to significantly improve the way you capture moments on your Galaxy phone. Why HDR Screenshots Matter

Crucially, these PNG files include vital metadata, such as gain maps. This metadata acts like a set of instructions, storing information about the original high dynamic range. When you view one of these special HDR screenshots on a display that supports HDR (like most modern Galaxy screens), the metadata tells the display how to accurately render the full range of colors and contrast, preserving the visual punch you saw originally.
This means screenshots of HDR photos from social media, intense gaming scenes, or vibrant video content will retain their intended brightness and color accuracy, offering a much more faithful representation of what was on your screen.
Testing & Availability Outlook
This promising feature is currently undergoing testing. Reports indicate that HDR screenshot support has been spotted in recent internal beta builds of One UI 8, specifically noted in a ZYF7 build. It was reportedly tested successfully on a device like the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, where a screenshot of an HDR photo retained the HDR effect when viewed in the gallery.
While the feature is currently limited to this closed beta phase, its presence there is a strong indicator that Samsung plans to roll it out more widely. Odds are looking good that it will be included in the upcoming One UI 8 public beta, allowing more users to test the enhanced screen grabbing capabilities.
