Scarlett Johansson Calls New Jurassic World Script ‘Incredible’

Hollywood superstar Scarlett Johansson is officially stepping into another iconic franchise, joining the upcoming Jurassic World film. Known globally for her role as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Johansson brings her star power and, it turns out, a long-held passion for the world of dinosaurs to the highly anticipated seventh installment in the Jurassic Park saga.

Johansson recently confirmed her casting and shared her immense enthusiasm for the project. Far from being just another role, she revealed that joining the Jurassic World universe has been a personal dream. She recounts seeing the original 1993 Jurassic Park film in theaters as a child, describing it as a “life-changing” and “mind-blowing” experience that ignited a deep fandom. In fact, she admitted to trying to get a role in the franchise for over a decade, even expressing willingness to take a small part just to be involved.

This long-standing dedication underscores her excitement for the new film, currently set for a July 2025 release. Johansson also offered high praise for the script, calling it “incredible.” The screenplay is penned by David Koepp, the veteran writer who wrote the original Jurassic Park and its 1997 sequel The Lost World: Jurassic Park. His return after nearly 30 years has been met with excitement from fans and appears to have deeply impressed Johansson.

Under the direction of Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), the new Jurassic World film aims to recapture the tone of the original classic. Koepp has described his vision as a “mission movie” focused on themes of “bottles” and “containment,” mirroring the structure and tension of the first film where characters were trapped on a dinosaur-filled island.

While plot details remain somewhat under wraps, reports suggest the story will follow a new cast of characters, led by Johansson, on an island mission. The objective? To retrieve materials from dinosaurs potentially for use in human medicine, a premise that naturally sets the stage for classic dinosaur encounters and survival scenarios reminiscent of the 1993 film.

This new direction signals a fresh start for the franchise, following the conclusion of the recent Jurassic World trilogy with Jurassic World: Dominion. That film, despite earning significant box office revenue, received a notably negative reception from critics (though beloved by audiences, and even star Jeff Goldblum enjoyed making it). The upcoming movie will feature an entirely new ensemble, including Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey, with previous cast members like Jeff Goldblum unlikely to return.

Working on a major franchise film like Jurassic World also brings unique logistical considerations for Johansson, who balances her career with motherhood. She recently spoke about being very selective about which projects allow her to travel with her children. While short, intense shoots might be less suitable, she noted that the new Jurassic World provided an opportunity to bring her family along. Filming took place over the summer in various locations, including Thailand, Malta, and the U.K., making it feasible to combine work with family travel and create enjoyable experiences.

With filming underway and a strong creative team aiming to honor the franchise’s roots while introducing a fresh story and cast, Scarlett Johansson’s enthusiastic involvement and praise for the script add significant anticipation for what’s next in the world ruled by dinosaurs.
