Over $126 Million in Fortnite Refunds Being Sent by FTC; Don’t Miss the July 9 Claim Deadline
Good news for many Fortnite players and parents: The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is distributing over $126 million in refunds to individuals who were charged for unwanted or unauthorized items within the popular online game. This significant action is part of a larger settlement with Fortnite developer Epic Games concerning allegations of deceptive practices.
The FTC began sending out nearly 970,000 payments via checks and PayPal on June 25 and 26, 2025. This follows an earlier distribution, bringing the total amount refunded to consumers impacted by Epic’s billing practices to approximately $200 million. While individual refund amounts vary, estimates from previous distributions place the average between $114 and $130 per claimant.
Why Are Fortnite Players Getting Refunds? The Epic Games Settlement Explained
This large-scale refund initiative stems from a settlement reached between the FTC and Epic Games. The FTC alleged that Epic used “dark patterns” and other deceptive design tactics to trick players, including many children, into making unintended in-game purchases.
Examples cited include charges triggered simply by waking the game from sleep mode or by pressing a button while attempting to preview an item rather than confirming a purchase. The FTC also claimed Epic Games reportedly blocked users who disputed these wrongful charges from accessing content they had already paid for.
Epic Games agreed to pay $245 million specifically to settle these allegations related to deceptive billing practices. This amount is part of a broader $520 million resolution with the FTC that also addressed privacy concerns.
Missed the First Window? The Fortnite Refund Claims Process is Reopened
For eligible players, parents, or guardians who did not file a claim during the initial period, the FTC has reopened the claims process. This provides another crucial opportunity to seek compensation from the settlement fund.
The new deadline to file a claim is July 9, 2025.
