The iconic Stanley Cup, arguably the most coveted trophy in professional sports, has once again shown signs of enduring a spirited championship celebration. This time, the venerable trophy sustained damage during the Florida Panthers’ jubilant party after securing back-to-back NHL titles.

Following their thrilling Game 6 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on home ice, which clinched their second consecutive championship, the Panthers team launched into a traditional, passionate celebration. The revelry began immediately on the ice, described by some as “wild,” where players took turns hoisting and parading the massive trophy. The party continued well into the early morning hours and carried on into Wednesday afternoon in Fort Lauderdale, involving the team and adoring fans.

During these intense celebrations, the 131-year-old silver chalice suffered some battle scars. Specifically, reports confirm the bowl of the Cup is cracked, with a visible crack appearing near the top section, and the bottom is dented.

It’s worth noting that damage is nothing new for the Stanley Cup. Made of silver and a nickel alloy and weighing nearly 37 pounds, the trophy is relatively malleable. Over its rich history spanning more than a century, the Cup has been subjected to various forms of enthusiastic, sometimes rough, handling. Past incidents include the trophy being submerged in swimming pools and even the Atlantic Ocean.

More recently, the Cup has taken hits during other championship celebrations. The Tampa Bay Lightning notably dropped the trophy during their boat parade after winning in 2021. The very next year, the Colorado Avalanche famously dented the Cup on the ice just moments after their victory, with forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel involved in the incident.

The damage sustained during the Panthers’ celebration adds another chapter to the Stanley Cup’s legendary, albeit sometimes bruised, history. Keepers of the Cup from the Hockey Hall of Fame are aware of the situation and are taking appropriate steps to address the damage. The plan is to have the trophy repaired and restored in time for the team’s scheduled celebration parade on Sunday.

While a cracked and dented Cup might seem unfortunate, many hockey fans and observers view these imperfections as symbols of the raw emotion, intense effort, and sheer joy involved in winning hockey’s ultimate prize. The damage serves as a lasting memory and a tangible representation of the Panthers’ struggle, triumph, and their place in the sport’s history. Like previous instances, the damage is expected to be repairable, ensuring the Cup will likely look “good as new” for future appearances and individual player days with the trophy.
