Browns Rookie Shedeur Sanders Cited for Excessive Speed

Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders was cited by police early Tuesday morning in Strongsville, Ohio, for allegedly driving at an excessive speed. According to police records, Sanders was stopped for driving 101 miles per hour, significantly exceeding the posted 60 mph speed limit on that stretch of highway.

The incident occurred around 12:24 a.m. on I-71 North near the Ohio 82 exit. An officer from the Strongsville Police Department pulled over Sanders, who was driving a black 2025 Dodge TRX truck, after clocking the vehicle at 41 mph over the legal limit.

The citation is classified as a fourth-degree misdemeanor. Sanders, 23, faces a choice: he can either pay a $250 fine to resolve the matter or appear in Strongsville Mayor’s Court on July 3 to contest the ticket.

Interestingly, sources indicate that Sanders’ girlfriend was also stopped in a separate vehicle on the same interstate shortly after, clocked at 92 mph, but received a warning instead of a citation.

Context: Sanders’ Status and Background

This traffic incident comes as Sanders is navigating his transition to the NFL. A highly recognizable college football star, he was selected by the Browns in the fifth round of the recent draft. This was considered a surprising slide for Sanders, who was projected by some analysts as a potential first-round pick and was the sixth quarterback taken. During his college career at the University of Colorado, where he played under his father, NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, he amassed impressive statistics, including 7,364 passing yards and 64 touchdowns over two seasons.

Sanders is currently part of a competitive quarterback room in Cleveland. With Deshaun Watson sidelined by injury, Sanders is vying for a roster spot alongside veteran Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, a third-round pick. While unofficially listed lower on the current depth chart, opportunities could arise.

Sanders had recently participated in the Browns’ mandatory minicamp and remained in the Cleveland area afterward for rookie orientation, explaining his presence at the time of the citation. As of the time of reporting, the Cleveland Browns organization has not issued a comment regarding the incident. This marks the second time in three years a Browns player has been involved in a notable speeding-related event, following defensive end Myles Garrett’s car crash in 2022.
