A shocking act of targeted violence has shaken Minnesota, leaving two people dead and two others injured in attacks on the homes of two state lawmakers. Authorities are engaged in an extensive manhunt for the suspect, described by the governor as carrying out a “politically motivated assassination.”

The incidents unfolded early Saturday morning, beginning with a shooting at the home of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in Champlin, located about 22 miles north of downtown Minneapolis. Both Senator Hoffman and his wife sustained multiple gunshot wounds but are reported to be in stable condition and recovering after undergoing surgery.

Shortly after, Brooklyn Park police proactively checked on the home of State Representative Melissa Hortman, who lived nearby. Around 3:35 a.m., officers encountered a person leaving the Hortman residence who appeared to be a police officer, driving a vehicle resembling a police SUV equipped with emergency lights. When confronted, this individual, identified as the suspect, fired upon officers before fleeing. Inside the home, tragedy was discovered: House Democratic Leader Melissa Hortman, 55, and her husband, Mark Hortman, 58, were found deceased from multiple gunshot wounds. The family’s golden retriever was also reportedly shot.

Suspect Identified in Targeted Attacks

Authorities have identified 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter as the suspect in these violent attacks. A large-scale manhunt is now underway, involving federal agencies like the FBI, which is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction. Boelter is considered armed and dangerous. He was reportedly last seen wearing a light-colored cowboy hat and dark clothing.

Evidence recovered by investigators points strongly toward a political motive for the shootings. Inside a vehicle linked to the suspect, which resembled a police car, authorities found a “manifesto,” a list containing the names of dozens of politicians, including high-profile figures like Governor Tim Walz, U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, U.S. Senator Tina Smith, and state Attorney General Keith Ellison. The list specifically included victims Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman. Alarmingly, the list also featured the names of abortion providers and pro-choice activists. Papers inscribed with “No Kings,” reportedly linked to nationwide anti-Trump protests, were also found.

Both Representative Hortman and Senator Hoffman were known advocates for abortion rights. While authorities are investigating the full scope of the motive, the evidence strongly suggests the attacks were deliberately targeted due to the victims’ political positions and advocacy. Reports indicate the suspect may have worn a realistic latex mask during the attacks and used a ruse involving a flashlight to gain entry at one location, highlighting the premeditated nature and the deception used by the assailant who was impersonating law enforcement.

Background of the Suspect

Details emerging about Vance Boelter reveal a background in security operations, including international experience and leadership roles at private security firms specializing in armed services. Interestingly, Boelter had connections to state government, having been appointed by Governors Mark Dayton and Tim Walz to the Governor’s Workforce Development Council, an unpaid board position whose term expired in 2023. Despite these appointments under Democratic governors, records show he last registered to vote as a Republican in 2022.

A roommate of Boelter’s described him as a “nice guy” interested in starting a security company and purchasing squad cars for this purpose. However, the roommate also shared concerning text messages sent by Boelter the morning of the attacks, suggesting he had made “bad decisions” and might “be dead shortly,” along with an apology for causing trouble. Investigators are exploring potential connections between Boelter and the victims, noting a possible overlap with Senator Hoffman at public meetings, though no known personal relationship has been confirmed.

Widespread Condemnation and Security Concerns

The brutal attacks have elicited shock and condemnation from leaders across the political spectrum, from Governor Walz to former President Donald Trump. Governor Walz activated the State Emergency Operations Center and ordered flags flown at half-staff to honor Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, remembering her as a dedicated and effective public servant.

The incident has significantly heightened security concerns for elected officials and their families, both in Minnesota and nationwide, particularly given the targeting of family members and the discovery of the detailed list. Authorities have implemented increased security measures for individuals named on the list. The attacks underscore a disturbing climate of political polarization and the potential for violence, raising worries about the safety of those in public service. A makeshift memorial has been established at the Minnesota State Capitol, reflecting the grief and impact of the tragedy.

The manhunt for Vance Boelter continues as investigators work to fully understand the motive behind this unprecedented act of targeted political violence in Minnesota. Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, emphasizing that the suspect should not be approached.
