Heavy Rain Forces Suspension at 2025 U.S. Open Final Round in Oakmont

The final round of the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, just outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was suspended Sunday afternoon due to dangerous weather conditions. Torrential rain began pouring down, quickly saturating the course, causing puddles to form on greens and fairways and making conditions unplayable.

Play was officially halted at approximately 4:01 PM ET (2001 GMT) as officials blew the horn. Despite golfers and spectators initially attempting to play through the start of the rainfall, the worsening deluge necessitated the decision to stop. Players were directed off the course, with some transported back to the clubhouse, though the USGA reportedly kept some players “held in place” on the course to potentially avoid a lengthy re-warmup once play resumed.

The delay lasted for just over 90 minutes, or specifically 96 minutes, according to reports. During the suspension, groundkeepers worked diligently, using squeegees to clear standing water from critical areas like greens and fairway landing zones. Play officially resumed shortly before 5:40 PM ET, at 5:37 PM ET.

Leaderboard Snapshot When Play Stopped

At the moment of the suspension, the final group had completed seven holes and was on the 8th tee. Sam Burns, who started the day as the 54-hole leader, held a one-stroke advantage at 2-under-par for the tournament. Adam Scott, the 2013 Masters champion, was in second place at 1-under-par. Burns and Scott were the only two players under par for the championship when the weather delay occurred.

Both Burns and Scott had challenging starts to their final rounds, each sitting at 2-over par for their Sunday play through seven holes. Their battle saw early bogeys exchanged before reaching the 8th tee just one shot apart on the overall leaderboard.

Further down the leaderboard, other notable players were also struggling on the difficult Oakmont layout, compounded by the sudden change in conditions.

T3: Viktor Hovland (NOR) and Tyrrell Hatton (ENG) were tied at 1-over par for the tournament, having completed eight holes.
T5: Carlos Ortiz (MEX) and J.J. Spaun (USA) shared fifth position at 2-over par. Spaun, who had been near the lead early in the tournament, had a particularly difficult start to his final round, carding bogeys on five of his first seven holes.

    1. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler was 5-over par for the tournament, struggling with his putting on the back nine when play stopped.
    2. Jon Rahm was mentioned as the leader in the clubhouse, having completed his final round earlier with a strong 67, including birdies on his final three holes, to post a total of 4-over par.

      Weather Context and Outlook

The weather leading up to Sunday had been largely favorable for the third major championship of the year, with mostly dry conditions and temperatures reaching around 80 degrees earlier in the week. However, Sunday was anticipated to be a day of potential weather concerns, with the National Weather Service forecasting rain showers possible in the morning and scattered showers throughout the day.

Despite play resuming, Doppler radar indicated that weather systems remained in the area, posing an “outside chance” of another suspension. With approximately three hours of daylight remaining upon resumption – just slightly more time than estimated play time for the leaders – there was a notable concern about finishing the round before sunset.

Should the tournament face further delays, it raises the possibility of the U.S. Open concluding on a Monday. This has happened twice before in the tournament’s history due to storms, including in 1983, also held at Oakmont.
