Authorities across Minnesota and federal agencies are engaged in an extensive manhunt for a suspect accused in the targeted shootings of state lawmakers and their spouses, an incident characterized by officials as politically motivated violence. The attacks tragically resulted in fatalities and injuries, sending shockwaves through the state’s political community.

What Happened: Attacks on Lawmakers

The intense search is focused on 57-year-old Vance Boelter, who is wanted in connection with separate but seemingly coordinated attacks early Saturday morning.

The first incident occurred at the home of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette Hoffman, in Champlin. Both were shot multiple times but survived the attack and are reported to be in stable condition after undergoing surgery.

Shortly after, police responding to a welfare check at the Brooklyn Park residence of State Representative Melissa Hortman encountered the suspect. Tragically, Rep. Hortman, the top Democrat in the Minnesota House, and her husband, Mark Hortman, were killed in the attack. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner later confirmed their deaths were homicides resulting from multiple gunshot wounds.

Suspect and the Ongoing Manhunt

Vance Boelter has been identified as the sole suspect in these shootings. Described as 6-foot-1 with brown hair, he was last seen wearing a light-colored cowboy hat, dark jacket, and light pants before reportedly changing clothes. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Hundreds of law enforcement officers from local, state, and federal agencies, including the FBI and SWAT teams, are involved in the extensive search across the Twin Cities area and potentially beyond. The FBI has offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to Boelter’s arrest. Authorities believe Boelter is currently traveling on foot after his vehicle was recovered.

How the Attacks Unfolded

Investigators believe Boelter used deception to gain access to the victims’ homes. At the Hortman residence, a person dressed like a police officer emerged from the home driving a vehicle resembling a police SUV with emergency lights. Police say the suspect wore a tactical vest, badge, and carried equipment like a Taser, specifically impersonating law enforcement to potentially manipulate his way inside.

When confronted by responding officers outside the Hortman home, the suspect opened fire, exchanging gunshots before retreating into the house and then fleeing the scene on foot.

Evidence and Possible Motive

A chilling piece of evidence discovered in the suspect’s vehicle was a target list reportedly containing dozens of names. Sources familiar with the investigation indicate the list primarily included Democratic politicians and individuals prominent in the reproductive rights movement, including lawmakers and abortion providers. Both Representative Hortman and Senator Hoffman were reportedly on this list. A “manifesto” and literature related to the “No Kings” movement were also found, adding layers to the potential political motivation behind the attacks.

While the precise relationship between the suspect and victims is under investigation, it has been noted that Vance Boelter previously served on the Minnesota Governor’s Workforce Development Board alongside Senator John Hoffman for several years. Boelter’s background in the security industry may have contributed to the sophistication of the attacks, including the police impersonation tactic.

Widespread Condemnation and Increased Security

The targeted attacks have been met with widespread condemnation from across the political spectrum. Governor Tim Walz called it a “dark day for Minnesota and democracy,” emphasizing that the state would not be defined by fear or violence. He described the killings of the Hortmans as a “political assassination.”

Political leaders from both Democratic and Republican parties, including former President Trump and current federal representatives, have issued strong statements condemning the violence, stressing that politically motivated attacks have no place in American democracy. The incidents have prompted increased security measures for elected officials and others potentially at risk.

Tributes have poured in for Representative Melissa Hortman, remembered as a formidable leader dedicated to advancing women’s rights, clean energy, and policing reform during her tenure as House Speaker.

Authorities have issued a public safety advisory, urging residents to be cautious and suggesting that if a single police officer appears at their door, they should call 911 to confirm their identity, noting that responding licensed officers are currently working in pairs.

The investigation remains active as the manhunt for Vance Boelter continues.
