MyPillow founder and prominent Donald Trump supporter, Mike Lindell, is now facing a federal defamation trial in Denver, Colorado. The case centers on accusations he made following the contentious 2020 US presidential election, specifically targeting a former employee of voting machine company Dominion Voting Systems.
Former Dominion Employee Alleges Reputational Harm
The lawsuit was brought by Eric Coomer, who previously worked as a security professional for Dominion Voting Systems. Coomer alleges that Lindell falsely accused him of participating in a conspiracy to rig the 2020 election, which was won by Joe Biden.
According to court filings cited in the case, Coomer claims Lindell’s public statements have caused significant personal and professional damage. He states that his reputation, built over fifteen years, has been “irreparably tarnished.” Furthermore, Coomer alleges he now endures “frequent credible death threats” and has been unfairly made the public face of an imagined criminal conspiracy of unprecedented scope in American history.
Legal Battle Commences
Coomer, a resident of Colorado, initiated the legal action in 2022, filing lawsuits against Lindell, as well as his companies My Pillow, Inc., and Lindell TV. He is seeking an undisclosed amount in damages.
Proceedings in the trial commenced on Monday with jury selection. The case is being presided over by Judge Nina Wang, a Biden appointee. Mike Lindell is expected to take the stand to present his defense during the trial.
Outside the courtroom, Lindell reportedly described the legal proceedings as a “battle of biblical proportions, of evil and good.” Lindell has been a vocal proponent of various unsubstantiated theories regarding the 2020 election results, including claims that the election was rigged by “Satan” using a “computer algorithm.”
Part of Broader Election Claims Legal Battles
The defamation trial against Mike Lindell unfolds against the backdrop of widespread, baseless claims of mass voter fraud following the 2020 election, frequently promoted by former President Trump and his allies. A report from the select committee investigating the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol labelled Trump’s assertions of widespread voter fraud as “baseless.”
Dominion Voting Systems itself has pursued numerous legal actions against individuals and entities who amplified false claims about the company’s machines being rigged. A significant related case involved Dominion suing Fox News over similar accusations, which resulted in Fox settling out of court for a substantial $787.5 million.
Lindell’s vocal promotion of election conspiracy theories has also impacted his business; several major US retailers ceased carrying his MyPillow products in 2021 amidst his public endorsements of these claims.
