Iconic Trio Found for HBO’s Harry Potter TV Series Adaptation
The search for the next generation of wizards is over! HBO has officially announced the young actors who will step into the iconic roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley for its highly anticipated television series adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s bestselling books.
After an extensive global open casting call that saw tens of thousands of children audition, the network revealed the central trio:
Dominic McLaughlin will portray Harry Potter.
Arabella Stanton has been cast as Hermione Granger.
Alastair Stout will play Ron Weasley.
Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer and director Mark Mylod praised the newly chosen stars, stating, “The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen.” They also acknowledged the sheer volume of talent discovered during the casting process, which specifically sought actors aged between 9 and 11 for these pivotal roles. Casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann were credited for their “extraordinary search.”
Introducing the New Hogwarts Leads
These three young actors are relatively new to the screen, taking on the mantle from Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, who starred in the original blockbuster film franchise.
Dominic McLaughlin, a Scottish actor, has prior credits in the upcoming Sky comedy Grow (where he acted alongside fellow confirmed cast member Nick Frost) and is set to appear in the BBC action-adventure series Gifted. Arabella Stanton brings stage experience, having previously played the title role in Matilda: The Musical on the West End. For Alastair Stout, the Harry Potter series marks his first major acting role.
Joining an Esteemed Ensemble
The young trio will be joined by a growing list of established actors already confirmed for key roles at Hogwarts and beyond. The previously announced adult cast includes:
John Lithgow as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore.
Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall.
Paapa Essiedu as Professor Severus Snape.
Nick Frost as the affable groundskeeper Rubeus Hagrid.
Luke Thallon as Professor Quirinus Quirrell.
- Paul Whitehouse as caretaker Argus Filch.

A Faithful Adaptation with Unprecedented Depth
J.K. Rowling, author of the beloved book series, serves as an executive producer on the show. HBO has committed to delivering a “faithful adaptation” of her work, promising to preserve the integrity of the books.
Unlike the film series, which faced time constraints, the television format is designed to span at least a decade, allowing significantly more “breathing space” to explore the intricate plot lines, sub-plots, and detailed character developments from the original novels. The aim is to bring the stories to new audiences worldwide while providing a level of depth only possible in a long-form series. It’s also important to note that this new adaptation is intended to exist alongside the original films, which remain a core part of the franchise and widely available to fans.
Production Underway
Filming for the Harry Potter TV series is scheduled to commence in the summer of 2024 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK, the same iconic location where the films were made. While no official premiere date has been set, the first season is tentatively expected to air sometime in late 2026 or early 2027 on HBO Max.
