Meta Takes Legal Action Against ‘Nudify’ Apps Amid Mounting Pressure

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has initiated legal proceedings against a firm responsible for promoting so-called “nudify” applications on its platforms. These contentious apps notoriously employ artificial intelligence (AI) to generate highly realistic, fake nude images of individuals without their knowledge or consent.

The lawsuit targets the company behind the “CrushAI” apps, seeking a complete ban on their advertising across Meta’s services. This action follows months of what Meta described as a “cat-and-mouse” struggle to identify and remove these problematic ads.

In a blog post, Meta stated its commitment, saying, “This legal action underscores both the seriousness with which we take this abuse and our commitment to doing all we can to protect our community from it.”

However, the move has been met with calls for Meta to escalate its efforts. Alexios Mantzarlis, author of the Faked Up blog, highlighted the sheer scale of the problem, estimating “at least 10,000 ads” promoting such apps have appeared on Meta’s platforms.

Mantzarlis acknowledged the significance of Meta’s lawsuit but cautioned that the issue persists. “Even as it was making this announcement, I was able to find a dozen ads by CrushAI live on the platform and a hundred more from other ‘nudifiers’,” he noted, emphasizing the critical need for ongoing vigilance from researchers and the media to ensure platforms remain accountable and curb the proliferation of these harmful tools.

While creating or possessing AI-generated sexual content featuring children is illegal, charities like the NSPCC report that predators are actively “weaponising” these apps.

Matthew Sowemimo, Associate Head of Policy for Child Safety Online at the NSPCC, warned of the severe emotional impact on young victims. “The emotional toll on children can be absolutely devastating,” he stated, describing how many feel “powerless, violated, and stripped of control over their own identity.” The NSPCC, along with the Children’s Commissioner for England, has strongly urged the UK government to introduce legislation to ban these apps entirely for all UK users and prevent their large-scale advertising and promotion.

Meta’s Efforts and the Challenge of Enforcement

Beyond legal action, Meta has taken other steps to combat the wider problem. This includes collaborating with other tech companies by sharing information about problematic URLs associated with “nudify” apps. Since late March, Meta reports having provided over 3,800 unique URLs to participating firms.

Meta acknowledges the persistent challenge posed by companies attempting to evade its rules and deploy adverts without detection, often by creating new domain names to replace banned ones. The company claims to have developed new technology specifically designed to identify these elusive ads, even if they don’t contain explicit nudity. However, critics argue that the continuous cat-and-mouse game demonstrates the difficulty platforms face in proactively policing such sophisticated abuse.

The misuse of AI in “nudify” apps is part of a larger pattern of problematic content emerging from advanced AI capabilities on social media platforms and beyond.

Meta has previously used facial recognition against celebrity scammers and requires political advertisers to disclose AI use due to deepfake concerns impacting elections.
